Rep. Hardwick resigns after House speaker’s investigation

Associated Press, May 12, 2015

Surfside Beach Rep. Nelson Hardwick has resigned following a complaint investigated by House Speaker Jay Lucas.

The speaker’s office confirmed Wednesday that Hardwick chose to resign after being presented Tuesday with the results of that investigation. Lucas’ office declined to immediately disclose the nature of the complaint but says documents will be released Thursday.

The complaint was received a couple of weeks ago.

The 63-year-old Republican’s short resignation letter said he was quitting because he wanted to focus on his health. He was first elected in 2004.

Hardwick was at the House on Tuesday. He did not immediately return phone messages Wednesday.

Hardwick was chairman of House’s agriculture and natural resources committee for two terms before moving to the Ways and Means Committee this year.
