Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville has established its first satellite location in Bluffton to serve patients in the Lowcountry and surrounding areas.

The Shriners currently treat about 200 patients who live in the region stretching from Charleston to Savannah.

“Shriners has a long history of serving children. We are one of 22 hospitals and us coming to Bluffton is just our latest initiative to strengthen that mission,” director of business development Randy Risser said.

“We serve roughly 200 patients that travel to us from Savannah to Charleston, so coming down here is a way to reduce their travel costs.”

Shriners Hospitals treat patients with a wide range of orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions from an area including Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, regardless of the family’s ability to pay the medical expenses.

“We want everyone to know how easy it is to get a child referred into our hospital,” Shiners Hospitals for Children spokesperson Ashley Taylor said.

“The qualifications are a child from birth to the age of 18 with an orthopedic condition; you don’t need to go through a doctor, you can just go straight into the hospital based on need.”

The new Bluffton office on Arley Way will offer a variety of services, which include post-op visits, wound checks, new patient consultations and follow-up appointments.

“We are really thankful to be offering these services closer to home for these families because it should be really convenient,” Taylor said.

Patients will still need to go to the Greenville Shriners Hospital for surgeries, access to Motion Analysis Lab diagnoses, and for the benefits of the low-dose radiation EOS Imaging System.

Shriners who live in the area offer transportation to the Greenville Shriners Hospital at no expense to the family.
