School Sales Tax Meeting at Rose Hill March 30

GBRC Small

The third Listening Tour event will take place on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at Caddy’s at Rose Hill Clubhouse in Bluffton. The clubhouse is located at 4 Clubhouse Drive in Bluffton, 29910.

CARE, Citizens Advocating Responsible Education, launched a county-wide listening tour earlier this month to get the “pulse of the public” on the school district’s proposed 1 percent school building sales tax increase.

Although the school board has yet to finalize the proposal, it appears all but certain that a 15 or a 10-year plan will be approved by the board. The tax increase will apply to all items on which you currently pay a sales tax. The funds raised [by the proposed sales tax] will be used to finance new school construction and renovations, but no funds can be used for teacher salaries or instructional operating expenditures.

The County is also considering its own 1% sales tax increase to fund infrastructure projects. If both plans are on the ballot in November and approved by the voters, the sales tax would increase from 6 to 8%, a 33% increase.
