Senator Tom Davis Condemns Anti Semitic HHI Mayor Candidate

One of the Hilton Head’s mayoral candidates (Michael Santomauro) is a Holocaust revisionist, denying documented facts of the mass extermination of Jews, another (Rochelle Williams) is an admirer of Hitler, saying “He did what he had to do. He got that many people to follow him. He must have been doing something right.”

[Note: Alan Perry, another mayoral candidate who is shown in the pic accompanying the news story as sitting to the right of the gesticulating Santomauro, is NOT a Holocaust denier or Hitler admirer.]

Such statements must not go unchallenged; it is important to strongly and unequivocally condemn such statements at the time they are made. The Holocaust was real, horrific and, as is often said, must never be repeated. And we must realize attempts to revise its history, if left unchallenged, will eventually create a slippery slope that will make possible what now seems unimaginable.

I look forward to working with Rabbi Brad Bloom, who leads Congregation Beth Yam on Hilton Head, and others in our community to challenge and rebut those who, in my judgment, seek to mislead people and undermine societal awareness of historic anti-Semitic prejudice.

Woodrow Wilson, whose political positions I almost otherwise universally loathe, got it right when he said this about the First Amendment: “If a man is a fool, the best thing to do is to encourage him to advertise the fact by speaking. It cannot be so easily discovered if you allow him to remain silent and look wise, but if you let him speak, the secret is out and the world knows that he is a fool.”

I look forward to working with others in my district to expose these mayoral candidates as fools.
